法國建築師 Jean Nouvel 將設計 2010年 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
Jean Nouvel, the Prince of Wales's bête noire, picked for Serpentine pavilion
Ben Hoyle, Arts Correspondent A superstar architect whom the Prince of Wales tried to remove from a £500 million development next to St Paul's Cathedral will complete his first British project in Hyde Park this summer. Jean Nouvel, one of the most decorated and unpredictable architects in the world, has designed an extraordinary scarlet pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery featuring table tennis tables, an auditorium and a 12m wall tilting over the space at a gravity-defying angle. It will be the tenth such summer pavilion for the gallery, the latest and brashest instalment in what has become a highlight of the art and architecture year. Julia Peyton-Jones, the director of the Serpentine, said that the scheme offered an unmatched level of democratic engagement with the world』s most important architects, which is why it typically pulls in around 250,000 visitors a year, twice as many as the Venice Architecture Biennale. 「The public own the structure as soon as they can get into it. They can move the furniture, have picnics in the pavilion or play games in it. They can engage with the work of architects who will be in the cannon in a hands on way that would never be possible anywhere else in the world.」 The gallery has no budget for the pavilions, which are turned around in six months from invitation to completion. Usually sponsorship, sponsorship in kind and the sale of the structure at the end of its lifetime fund the project, although this year the Serpentine is receiving help from Arts Council England』s Sustain fund, designed to help organisations to maintain artistic excellence during economic downturns. Zaha Hadid was the first to accept the challenge and the parade of international architects who have followed her includes Daniel Libeskind, Oscar Niemeyer, Rem Koolhaas, Olafur Eliasson and Frank Gehry. Last year』s commission was a swooping, delicate aluminium structure by the Japanese architects SANAA, which was praised for its lightness of touch and reflective qualities. Mr Nouvel will offer something different. The 64-year-old Frenchman has a reputation for eccentricity in both his habits (he dresses only in black in winter and only in white in summer) and his buildings. When he won the Pritzker Prize in 2008 (often referred to as architecture』s Nobel prize) the judges acknowledged Novel』s 「persistence, imagination, exuberance, and... insatiable urge for creative experimentation」 but they also surprisingly noted that he had met with 「varying degrees of success」. Nouvel』s friend Gehry has said: 「He』s precarious. He tries things, and not everything works.」 It is more than 20 years since his breakthrough building, the elegant Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 1987, but his business went bankrupt in the 1990s. However he is riding high with major commissions in the Middle East and New York and a concert hall in Copenhagen that has been hailed as the best in the world. His first permanent building in Britain is scheduled to open at the end of this year immediately to the east of St Paul』s. One New Change is a vast retail and office complex that Mr Nouvel has described as a 「stealth bomber」 because of its distinctive appearance. The building is low slung and coated in pioneering red, grey, and beige anti-reflective glass to avoid distracting too much attention from the cathedral. The developer, Land Securities, said last year that the Prince of Wales had lobbied unsuccessfully to have Mr Nouvel taken off the project. 「He hadn』t seen the scheme, he just complained about the selection of the architect,」 Mike Hussey, then London director of Land Securities said. 「He didn』t want a modernist.」 The Prince offered his own architectural advisers, who prefer traditional building designs, to help. Nouvel』s Serpentine Pavilion is to be made from steel, glass plastic and fabric. Tom Dyckhoff, The Times architecture critic, said that the commission was intriguing at a time when 「wow factor architecture」 was supposed to be past it. 「Jean Nouvel does glitzy statement architecture with knobs on, straight out of a sci-fi movie. The pavilion』s design — a giant red flash across the park, with a macho cantilever, and throbbing colour — will either prove there』s life in the old dog yet, or put dancing shoes on a corpse. Either way it』ll be a show not to miss.」 archicake
